Testing 101 concept.

Please don't take this response as harsh. I would recommend a good testing book. Cem Kaner is an excellent author for things like this.

The reason I suggest that is because the answer can and does fill chapters, so you will not get everything you need by posting and getting responses here.

Re: -ve and +ve Testing wiht Example

Since the Functional Testing forum is supposed to be for basic definitions, I'll take this one on .

A positive test is when you exercise a field or feature using valid input and expect a valid result.

For example, if the feature is adding a new customer, you would put valid information in each of the fields and select the correct button to add the customer. You would verify the customer was added by either doing a search for the new customer, checking a report, or actually looking at the database, depending on the application.

A negative, or invalid test, is verifying that the system handles incorrect information gracefully - usually with an informative error message. So if you take the same feature - adding a new customer - you would input invalid data, or combinations of fields, and verify the system handled that incorrect data gracefully.

Negative testing is often the more creative part of test development or testing; specifications often do not cover what happens when you do something incorrectly.

Riddhi - what kind of "more input" are you looking for?

I think he is refering to the example he wants in the original post.

More than Linda already provided?

Ok, imagine you are testing a numeric field that permits only integer values 1 through 10.

Some Positive Tests:
- 1
- 10
- 2

Some Negative Tests:
- 0
- 11
- 3.3
- x

etc, etc.

I think Linda just didn't use a big enough silver platter, that's all.

Oh, I think it was wide enough. Just not enough detail on the engraving .
