Inputs to Functional Test Case Creation?

    To all:

Question: What are your "real world" inputs to functional test case creation?

I know that we are supposed to use functional specifications; however, the functional specs that I have seen have been pretty bad. Specifically, they tend to be low-level physical (low-level design-dependent) descriptions, instead of high-level logical.

My "real world" inputs, in addition to the specs that I get, have been the following:

    * Data Flow Diagrams (that I create.)
    * Entity Relationship diagrams (that I
    create.)
    * Logical "If-Then" flow charts (that I
    create).

Re: Inputs to Functional Test Case Creation?

I will differentiate the inputs for functional test cases in two parts.
1)Testing along with SDLC phases : SRS & Design Document.

2)Testing after development of the application i.e. before release : Working Application, List of Business Logics

    Thanks

Re: Inputs to Functional Test Case Creation?

For creating a testcase we must have a High Level condition

This condition may be derived from any of the documents that u have specified

What u say is correct in the real time scenario we will not be getting a pakka set of documents from the client / Developer

we will get only semi documents like this

so dont get affraid of that ,just draft the conditions from the document given and have it reviewed by a Subject matter Expert he may be able to point out the areas u have left add that things

then openly go to the developers / clients and say this r all the conditions that we have got from the document u have given and sent it for a review to them , if it's ok for them proceed with it r else they specify some more things

After getting the AUT try to draw a gap analysis and sent it for client/ Dveloper rieview

i think afer doing all this things the client / Developer would be much more satisfied

then develop the test case with the help of the finalised set of conditions

Most of the times you won't be able to get the named documents like Software Requirements specification, USer requirement specification, Functional requirements etc. If it is a process company which is following CMM or ISO you will get very specific documents which can tell in detail about the application.
Otherwise you have to use all available documents and related emails to develop the test cases.

Use cases are the typical starting point to develop the test cases..

Re: Inputs to Functional Test Case Creation?

    Hi,
The actual scenario is that we do not get any proper documentation at all. The application actually once should go for a Unit test before it comes for Functional test.

Before starting with test case, a high level test scenarios may be developed covering the entire functionality. Then test case can be prepared based on the scenarios and reference can be given if necessary, so the coverage can be ensured.

Ideally the functional test case can include the following -

    Functionality covered
    Prerequisite
    Description
    Expected Result
    Actual result (Database/Screen)
    Pass/Fail
    Remarks

I hope this can give some idea
