data mapping?. why is it required for testing ?.
OK iam working on a client facing application(a website).the feature iam testing is a new search ability Why do we need the datamapping for this kind of functionality. Whats the significance?. Search yeilds reports. What can data mapping uncover which the report will not.

I'm not sure what you mean by the term "datamapping".
Let's assume you mean something like "mapping data elements from the source data, through all intermediate models, to the data used by the search facility and the data presented in the search results".
If that's the case, then certainly understanding the relationship of these data elements is important. How else do you know that the results of your search are based on the source data elements, and not something inappropriate? How would you know the values in the report are correct?
If you search for "Test" and your report indicates that the term isn't found - how would you know if your search/report are correct or if there is a bug, if you don't first understand the data?
