# Thread: Measuring the size in pixels of a font on a PDF?

1. ## Measuring the size in pixels of a font on a PDF?

Hi all.

I am currently busy with testing the introduction of the new layout Standards within a portal application. The new standards define precisely which font size (in pixels) to be used for each different object that is displayed on a page. Please consider the case of a PDF report: how can I check the font size in pixels?

Until now the only possible way I figure out is:

- display the PDF at 100% and cut the text for which I need to measure the font
-paste the text in Word and check how many points it is
- use the conversion table available at http://reeddesign.co.uk/test/points-pixels.html
to convert point to pixels

Unfortunately the conversion table is not 100% perfect so I don't know if the results of my test are correct or not.

Any suggestions?

size in pixels = size in points / 72

[ QUOTE ]
size in pixels = size in points / 72

Are you sure?
So are you saying that a 72-point font would be 1 pixel high?

I found this little nugget with a Google search for "How to convert font size to pixels".

The site provided by FredMan was very helpful. Informative and concise.

I had a chat with the development team and we agreed on using the following test approach:

- approximation table (as explained in my original post)
- in case of doubts double-check the results with the formula (dpi)
- check on paper by comparing the printed PDF (100%) and some sample text of known size (in points) formatted in Word

That should be more then enough....
