Operating system for Localization Testing

Hi All,

Need your guidance in doing localization testing.
I have windows application which is in more than 10 languages like english, Japanese, Spanish, French, Hebrew etc.

We cannot afford to have so many Winodws OS.
So, How should we test this application so that application will work fine on their language specific platform.

Suggestion are most welcome!

Thanks in Advance,
Harish

Re: Operating system for Localization Testing

Hi Harish,

I had the same question about 10 years ago on a company I worked, and what we did was go to support and ask them if they had experience and data on the most problematic systems and where were the problems located.

After reviewing the issues and their root-cause with our Development we got to a lower number of platforms that would allow us to test only 20% of the systems we supported.

In short, work with your team and don't try to find magic-answers outside...

- you could contract out the localization testing, to localization experts, or crowd-sourcers

- you could decide not to bother testing on all the locales, and choose only a few with which to test

- you could have your customers do the localization testing when a new locale must be supported, in exchange for a discount, perhaps

Remember that this is not just a testing problem. If you can't afford to have many Windows versions, what will you do when a support request comes in?

For me, this is simply a cost of doing business with that locale. If you really want a French version, I can't understand why you wouldn't be willing to pay the cost for real French support, localization testing, etc.

MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) offers subscriptions that provide multiple OS versions. It isn't free (or cheap) but it is less costly that full licensed copies of each OS. There are restrictions.

Go to msdn.microsoft.com
