A client wants us to test a couple of applications with different antivirus pachages.
Basically they want to test several applications on computers that have anti-virus tools installed and running on them. They want to find information on whether the antivirus applications are identifying any of the files as suspect, as well as understanding if there is any effect of the antivirus on the performance of the product.
Possible packages migyt be Avira, Trend Micro, Synmantec, McAfee, and Microsoft Security Essentials.
The way I see it, we just have to set up environments and then let the AV scan and the SW run at the same time to see if any conflicts happen.
Has anyone been invloved in this type of testing before? Does the testing have a particular name (antivirus cmpatibility maybe)? How do we test the performance part?
Any general suggestion/ inputs as well would be appreciated.
I would call it Compatibility Testing. As for the performance, you need to establish a performance baseline before you install the AV application, then compare the baseline to the resultant performance.
Your company should have a process in place for this if they plan on charging clients for it. That's just good business.
