    Re: API and Customizations testing

I know your feelings. Still, think about this: if PS is happy with quality, then why should you test anything? Donít think you (as product team) should fix 10 bugs to remove 1 potential bug by PS (be ready to have even worse rates). You need at least few incidents where API defects caused some critical implications (e.g. a lot of money lost). Still there is nothing to calculate, only to point out.

    API and Customizations testing

I'm testing a product that has an open API which professional services use. I would like to suggest to the management to test this API before it gets to the hand of the PS.
I would like to intrduce some numbers on how much it is going to save est.
Can anyone suggest how such things are calculated?
Also I would like to introduce a testing plan on the customization points, how should I calculate that?

    Re: API and Customizations testing

Oh, there are many such incidents...
The problem until now was that there was no one in the QA how could do such kind of tests...

    Re: API and Customizations testing

So you should prove that you could, instead of calculating return. Perhaps you actually could not as you have no experience and open API testing more like unit tests and developer are better at them. I would suggest your PS to push developers to provide published unit tests.
Another option is pilot by QA.

What do you mean pilot by QA?

    Re: API and Customizations testing

Pilot = take one (or few) API function and create few tests for it - you should be able to afford few day effort without approval.
You will see how much defects you are able to detect. This will even give some input for calcuations.

    Re: API and Customizations testing

I'm drifting off the point slightly here but, APIs are often areas that lend themselves very well to low maintenance test automation. Since APIs hide their implementation from their users, they tend to provide a very stable interface. We use such an API as part of our nightly process that pick up defects the day developer make their code changes.

    Just another justification.
