Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

Hi all,

This is fairly vague - but It might help those who are looking for a bug tracking tool:

1) Which bug tracking tool are you currently using?
2) List the pros / cons
3) Give it a rating of 1 - 10 (1 being horrible, 10 being great)

Personally - we're using an in-house built tool.

It lacks reporting, detailed tracking, user level restrictions and the interface is brutal to say the least. It's good side is that it's being used across the entire team - so it's integrated.

I'm being nice when I rate it as a 2.

1) Which bug tracking tool are you currently using?
We use Serena's PVCS Tracker v8.0.
2) List the pros / cons
Pros: full-feature web client, can be notified of new bug reports or changes to bug reports, highly configurable, easy to maintain
Cons: unable to pre-load forms within large text fields, cannot choose multiple items from a drop-down list, a resource hog
3) Give it a rating of 1 - 10 (1 being horrible, 10 being great)

Re: Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

We use in-house build Lotus Notes based database.
Pros: LN means option to have web interface. LN have such item as multi-selecet fields. It also mean integration with e-mail (automated notifications) and all the document storage databases (one-click links); LN security, history tracking and possibility to get all the reports you want using private views (still you need little as there are report generation scripts that even analyse defect history). We have also integration with CVS implemented. It is highly configurable as it was initially created as product to sell. There are global (e.g. problem types) as well as project level setting (e.g. project team, status flow, cause and sub-cause lists, etc.).
Cons: It is becoming slow as we start to use it more and more not only for defect tracking but tracking all the processes (because it is too good).
And well, it takes quite a time to learn how to use all the good features of the system and get used to them. I’m afraid it is too heavy for tiny projects.

I believe you will not be surprised I’m going to rate it 9 only because of the performance issue. I can’t think of any functionality that it lack and if I will I will ask our LN developers to implement it. (note: I have used Test Directory quite a while and I have to compare it to our system it’s almost like comparing notepad to MS Word).

Wanted to add that I’m only advanced user of this system not a sales person. And I’m really wondering why aren’t we selling this wonderful system. Maybe because no company is ready to use such a complicated system.

Re: Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

We are using Bugzilla

pro:
- it cost nothing (Open Source) and is easy enough to use it without loosing to much time by try and error.
- You can find enough help all over the WWW.
- It has most of the feature i need.
- it is web based

contra: it is not easy to costomize the Bug Lifecycle

In earlier projects i use change synergy (telelogic) and Clear Quest (IBM) and i think Bugzilla is good as this expensive tools.

My rate for Bugzilla: 8

Re: Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

We're using a customized version of Bugzilla, which I would rate as a 4. The search facility is a pig.

We will be moving to using TestDirector enterprise-wide. I've used TD before, and I would rate it an 8. The primary negatives are that it is project-based and the reporting facility is limited. The pros are that the features are very robust and customization is simple.

Re: Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

Disclaimer: These ratings/comments are of my personal opinion and can be used only as a guideline to selecting a defect tracking tool

Rational ClearQuest - 8/10
JIRA - 7/10
PVCS Tracker - 7-8/10
TestDirector 8.5-9/10

JIRA and PVCS Tracker are less costlier than ClearQuest and TestDirector I presume. I am sure of JIRA being much less costlier than ClearQuest because in an earlier project I had worked in the client had initially funded for ClearQuest license but later changed to JIRA primarily because of cost factors.

These are the defect tracking tools I am familiar with.

We use Jira, and I love it. I'd recommend you check it out.

Pros: Easy UI, easy administration, easy setup, easy to maintain, cheap (?), good support, updates are relatively frequent

Cons: Doesn't integrate with our development lifecycle, i.e. if we wanted to implement a total Rational solution, this would not fit.

I would welcome your comments and the order you rate them.

Thank you.

Re: Rate Your Current Bug Tracking System

I have used a number of tool including:

TestDirector : 6 (not solely a test tool)
PVCS Tracker : 3 (Crap)
Elementool : 7 (Web based, so good for multiple locations)

If it is only a bug tracking system then many features supplied with certain systems are not required.

Personally, what I require from a bug tracking system is:

1. Easy to Navigate
2. Issue flow
3. Screenshot capability in issue (not attachment)
4. Attachment
5. Document history
6. Way to distribute issue
7. Able to search all issues by keyword

None of the tools above accomplished this. I am not a developer but set up a Lotus Note database in two days that accompished all of this.
