I just started at a new company and one of my first tasks is to implement a defect tracking system. I know there is a defect tracking forum here but it doesn't look like it gets much attention. What would you consider to be essentials for a defect tracking system? The company I am with will be building the program themselves based on existing technology the company has. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Although you have stated the reason for posting a defect tracking subject into functional testing forum, I assume that you've not given it a shot there. I'd suggest you to do so.
I dont think the defect tracking forum is negelected.
Further more regarding your post, it gives us no pointers as to what technology your company wishes to use or what is your company involved in etc, some of which will be key factors in deciding the requirements of your Defect Tracking System.
Just as some examples,
1) If the defect trackin is goin to be used by very few people, situated at a same place, then it need not be web based.
2) Some companies define their own criteria for the order in which bugs need to be fixed, so what are your companies criteria, or in which order are the bugs fixed now.
3) What are the number of approx bugs that are handled at present, this will determine what kind of database you want to use.
Beeing a "first time poster I'd recommend you to try to search, or just surf on these forums. You'll find many discussions on this subject,... and after reading those post you could have some answers... or more questions.
