Rational ClearQuest/ClearCase Integration
Our company is currently shopping for a new source control system and it looks as though we are leaning toward Rational's ClearCase. We're currently using Bugzilla as our defect tracking tool but we have found a few areas where we think that Bugzilla has fallen short of our expectations or doesn't have functionality we would find useful. I was wondering if anyone had any experience/opinions on ClearQuest as a stand-alone defect tracking tool or the integration with ClearCase.
Re: Rational ClearQuest/ClearCase Integration
I've used both Bugzilla and ClearQuest (and a few others). I would recommend stay well away from ClearQuest. A previous company I worked for bought another that used Rational products and Rational used that to leverage ClearQuest into our company. No disrespect to Rational but it's a very poor tool compared to some of the tools currently on the market. It can do most things others tools do but the way it does it and the administration side is poor. ClearQuest is "web enabled" as opposed to "web based" unlike Bugzilla (ie you don't get all the functionality of the product if you use the web interface, heavy users need to install client software). Also, periodically ClearQuest (the server) would crash for unknown reasons. Rational did make some suggestions that improved things but it is nowhere near as stable as Bugzilla (never went down, rock solid). Like Clearquest, Bugzilla needs a bit of time scripting it for your defect tracking process. For Bugzilla, you need someone decent in UNIX to administer it (but it needs very little administration once set up). For ClearQuest administration we had a fulltime DBA who spent over a third of his time administering about 200 users.
My advice would be spend a bit of time scripting Bugzilla to suit your defect tracking process. Its a far better tool than Clearquest. I would be very surprised if ClearQuest has added functionality over Bugzilla (apart from maybe ClearCase integration).
