1. ## Defect Detection rate

Hi all,

Can anyone please explain how to calculate Defect Detection rate(DDR) and what is the purpose of it?

Regards,
Senthil

3. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

Thanks, But the post doesnt say how to calculate the DDR.

4. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

OK.. I am not sure about the formula to calculate DDR. However, it depends whether the defects are detected during Reviews or Testing??

5. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

Defect Detection Rate is the number of defect detected per period of time. (For example, 20 defects per week)

It it calculated by taking the total number of defects found, and dividing by whatever number is needed to reduce it to the desired period of time. If you want "per week" and you have gathered your total number of defects over 17 weeks, then divide by 17.

Its purpose is to construct a metric which some people find useful.

IMHO, this is an average defect detection rate (DDR). It may be useful for some people, but I guess more people would be interested in the trend of the DDR over time.

In that case, a weekly DDR would be the number of defects detected each week since the beginning of the test / inspection effort.

As I indicated, it it calculated by taking the total number of defects found, and dividing by whatever number is needed to reduce it to the desired period of time.

So if you want a 1 week DDR using 1 week's worth of defects, you divide by 1. If weekly DDR trend is meaningful for you, then this is the way to do it. You could do the same for monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly if those have meaning for you.

If you wish to compare the DDRs from one version of a product to another, then this may not be as meaningful.

Personally, I find all DDRs pretty much useless.

8. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

hi senthil,

defect detection rate is the rate at which testers find the defect.

usually

DDR = (no of defects detected / no of test cycle)* 100

9. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

Amit,

I think you are calculating percetange and not rate. Percentage would help in comparison and rate would indicate speed ! Am I right?

10. ## Re: Defect Detection rate

Joe,

If you say measuring DDR is useless, then can you suggest some other metrics which directly measures the quality of the Testcase.

Senthil
