Configuration Item Naming Scheme
Does anyone have methodologies or examples of configuration item naming schemes? I have to deal with hardware, software and documentation on multiple projects. We are in the process of establishing a much improved configuration management process and can use the help.
Re: Configuration Item Naming Scheme
Not sure if it helps but we have gone for a simple sequential scheme as an ID with the name then becoming a non-essential (more descriptive) attribute.
For hardware we quite simply list items as CMH0001, CMH0002, CMH0003 etc; Data Processing Apps are listed as CMDP0001, CMDP0002 etc; Infrastructure Apps CMIA001 etc; Databases CMD0001 etc; Relationships CMR0001 etc
- you get the idea I'm sure.
For ease of use for 'humans' we then assign a more descriptive name to each of these records e.g Prod_MSOffice_ServerDPAppl or Test_SalesBox_Server
We are still in our relative infancy with regards implementing but thought I'd throw this into the pot.
