True Agile - Principle - Face-to-Face Conversation

The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.

The following three things may help:
1. If possible, locate teams together for the duration of the project. When teams are co-located don’t assume that daily interaction in person translates into instant understanding. Also don’t assume that location in the same building means people will actually talk. I’ve seen team members using instant messenger or texting more rather than moving their head around a neighbor’s cubicle. It’s a cultural trend of younger generation. Get used to it.
2. If locating the teams together is not possible for the entire duration of the project, bring team member together for intervals. Kick-off and significant milestones are two occasions where flying team members in for a few to several days provides some extra mileage in the communication journey.
3. If the team(s) must be 100% virtual for the entire project’s duration, empower that team with the best tools. Provide for media richness. Ensure conference calls are aided with webinar and story board sharing. Establish consistent communication protocols and behavior.

Virtual teams do not have to be an Agile show stopper but it takes some planning to accommodate.
Face-to-face interaction-
• Stimulates and energizes the discussion and communication. You are able to draw anything to support your story and focus the discussion on the images on the whiteboard.
• Enables you to verify if your message is getting through via the non-verbal communication of the group.
• Enables involvement in the discussion is a good helper in transferring information. Getting developers involved will help them see the business purpose behind requirements.
• Gives the project manager the leverage for getting this commitment. Asking “Do you agree upon this approach” is really something different than letting everyone say “Yes, I agree.” during a conference call.
• Helps during demonstrations of new models or build features.
• Empowers the development of a personal relationship. A team with members with a personal relationship will be more cohesive realizing their common goal.
