My boss has asked to me search out alternatives to TestComplete. Any suggestions.
We are doing functional testing, and need to go against a .Net application.
The problem isn't with TC. We are going to expand our department (up from one-me) by adding at least 6 people. There has been a problem with the licensing that would mean we would have to purchase all new licenses instead of upgrading.
Anyway, the boss is now ticked, and I'm supposed to find some alternatives.
So, can anyone recommend a product that someone with a background in TC would be comfortable in?
You could try Vermont Hightest, http://www.vtsoft.com/vcsproducts/index.html. I have to say that I tried it and for me, TestComplete is way better, but it is similarly priced. It has a trial download, so check it for yourself. In my case, it worked ok to start with (MFC C++), but fell over later on when I moved to a new GUI library (Stingray).
IMO, if your boss is willing to change from a tool that is proven to work well for you, to an alternative that may not work, and may be much more expensive, he/she needs his head examined.
If you search for cost of tools and ROI in the automation thread, you will notice that most of the more experienced posters suggest that it is unwise to get hung up on the licensing cost of automation tools, as ultimately this forms a very small part of the overall cost of automation.
