    Problems with Demo and debugging

I'm helping someone with the demo of TC4 and they are having a lot of trouble getting breakpoints to work.

We've tried the recommendations in the iconic forum posts and it still doesn't work. They have VisualStudio 6 and 2005 installed. pdm.dll was pointed at the wrong place, but the instructions for changing that have been followed. The user is in the debugger list. We tried someone's suggestion to see if TC has pdm.dll in its memory space using ProcessExplorer and it is not being used.

Nothing we do seems to allow the script to stop on a breakpoint.

    Ideas?

    Hi Dan,

Have you tried reinstalling Windows Script Debugger?

Re: Problems with Demo and debugging

I have had the same problem, and rebooting the computer usually resolves the issue.

TC4 will run flawless for a while, then various errors will start occuring within my script (that once worked 10 minutes previously).

When I am trying to figure out what the failure is, I will put the breakpoints in, and TC4 skips over them. And when this occurs, thats when the "funny" stuff really starts occuring. I have spent a few hours trying to figure out what it was, but to no avail. I will try to run the file that David suggested, but this issue really causes for a concern with TC4's confidence factor.

Re: Problems with Demo and debugging

    Hi Mike,

Please try things suggested by Atanas in this thread:
    URL=http://www.qaforums.com/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=43;t=000639;p=1#000 000

BTW, I think the problem may be caused by another application that also uses the script debugger. This application may take control over the debugger and prevent TestComplete from using it.

Re: Problems with Demo and debugging

Well, I am working on a vista machine and the trial version of TestComplete 5 and I have problems with the breakpoints, too.
I checked the pdm.dll, I reinstalled the script debugger, I more than once restarted my computer.
On an XP machine it is working as expected, but not on vista.
I also completely turned off the UAC.
And I am in the debugger user group.
Not to forget to mention, that I did run it as an administrator.

Perhaps someone has got any ideas?
    Much appreciated!

    Paul.

Re: Problems with Demo and debugging

I had this problem a few months ago when I installed the TC5 trial version.

I tried all the suggested steps, which didn't help. I pulled the pin when it was suggested to me that I systematically uninstall applications on my machine.

My solution was to source a different (read: better - bless the IT admin) desktop machine. It was interesting to note that, although not that much newer, still on winXP and with pretty much the same applications installed, new machine didn't suffer the same affliction.

It would have been nice to find out why it wasn't working, but it was not worth the amount of time, effort and cost.

Well, that is my problem. Not much time, too.
Perhaps I will find a solution in the near future.
I will post it here, when I succeed.

Re: Problems with Demo and debugging

    Hi Paul,

Situations when the debugger does not work occur on some computers from time to time. However, we are still unable to find the exact cause of the problem. Each of the steps suggested by Atanas already helped in different cases, but they are not panacea. I think the problem can be caused by some specific system settings or software installed on the computer, but we do not know exactly what settings or software can affect this.

You can try removing unneeded non-standard software from the computer, especially tools that may use script debugging or the Internet Explorer HTML control. Perhaps, this will help eliminate the aggressor that makes problems for the script debugger. Unfortunately, there is nothing else I can suggest at the moment.
