We currently use QARun, which has loads of handy functions for example; textselect() to move to the required onscreen text.
and functions to find items in grids etc.
I've been looking through some of the document for test complete, and it looks very (vb etc) script based. so does anyone know if functions like those mentioned above are possible/available in testcomplete.
Sort of ish, the scripting is more vbscript than vb. So not completed like QARun. Basically to do what you say you would look at the page and look for a property or method that allows you to textselect but not sure if it would do exactly that. But if the text is a link or discrete object then yes but QARun has the best text facilities of the tools anyway!

They are close enough to be the same thing. Main difference is that in VBScript everything is a variant. They both have a few concepts that are not available in the other (so it is not true to say VBScript is a subset) but that would be splitting hairs.
GUI automation is GUI automation. It is not testing.
