I use 3 Virtual Machines, WinXP, Vista, Win7, for my automation testing and each have a TestComplete (named license) installed on each. Over the past few months, I started with TC6 (named licenses), upgraded to TC7 (named licenses), and now upgraded to TC8 (named licenses). But what was not highly advertised about TC8 and appears as a one-liner in the TestComplete 8 product desscription is:
Important: Using TestComplete on a virtual machine requires a Floating User license.
$2,500 more dollars for a floating license ...that's crazy!
This restriction makes it difficult to debug my scripts on the different Windows OS if I can only run TestExecute.
My physical PC is WinXP, and I have no means to acquire 2 more physical machines for Vista and Win7. Hence that is why companies use Virtual machinces. But now TC8 screws that up for existing automation structures in place.
What I use to be able to do with TC7 I now cannot with TC8.
Thanks a lot AutomatedQA or(Smartbear).
I am really disappointed in this move by the company.
I guess I am going to stay back on TC7 and not upgrade.
I've got the TC8 licenses, but what a waste now with this restriction.
I need to see about getting my mony back on my TC8s.
Re: Disappointed in TC8 -Named License VM restriction
There is an option to upgrade Named User licenses to Floating licenses for existing TestComplete 8 customers - this would be cheaper. I recommend that you contact our Sales department at firstname.lastname@example.org regarding this.
