Tool for client server app written in TCL language

Is anyone aware of an automated tool that supports automated regression testing of a client server application written in TCL (Tool Command Language)?

I talked to a HP Sales rep yesterday to determine if the latest version of Quicktest Pro works with TCL. He wasn't sure so had to check with his developers. I have a hunch QTP probably won't work so I need another alternative.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: Tool for client server app written in TCL language

I'm no expert in TCL but, if I remember correctly, TCL is the propriatary scripting language used by Mercury WinRunner. I'd be willing to bet that there are no other tools out there that use that scripting language.

Is there a reason why TCL is a requirement for your tool? The reason I ask is that QTP, TestComplete, and some others all support VBScript as a scripting language. I would think that it would be easier to support VBScript automation code than it would be to support TCL...

...again, all this is based upon my assumption above. I could be totally wrong in which case simply ignore everything I've said.

Re: Tool for client server app written in TCL language

I don't need a testing tool written in TCL. What I need is a testing tool that fully supports testing a client server application that is written in TCL.

I ask the question because my experience with Quicktest Pro is that it did not officially support Javascript. My team wrote web apps using cold Fusion and .Net with heavy usage of Javascript. When recording test scripts using QTP, it would often not recognize any controls written in Javascript. I want to avoid a situation like that with this client server project I am working on.

TCL is a general purpose scripting language created by John Ousterhout. It is used lots of places.

WinRunner's language is called TSL (test script language).

Re: Tool for client server app written in TCL lang

For testing a client / server app through the client, it shouldn't matter what the server is written in, only what the client is written in. If the client is a web browser, then there are lots of tools that should work with it. Your main challenge is likely to be if the interface includes JavaScript (as you've found before) or Flash/Flex, etc.

Is that your situation? Or is the client also written in TCL?

Server side TCL would just be evil

The client software is written in Tcl using the Tk GUI toolset. I guess the correct way to refer to the application is that it is a Tcl/Tk client server application. Here is a developer's resource website for the language:

    http://www.tcl.tk/

I did find one German vendor that supports Tcl/Tk apps.

    Froglogic Squish

The current exchange rate for US dollars and Euros make this product currently more expensive to purchase than it was in the past so I'm still looking for a vendor.

Yeah, the exchange rate is rather painful right now.

You may want to look at our product, Eggplant, which can test GUI apps regardless of what they're written in, since it automates the entire system through the UI (just like a user) rather than communicating with the internals of your program.
