We have an application that runs on an X11 window. We are trying to figure out the best strategy to automate testing. Since we use MS Windows (Using VNC/CYGWIN to see our X-Windows app) to test, our current option is bitmap checking (i.e. clicking a button, and comparing the resulting screen's screenshot with a stored one). This is, in my opinion, not nearly the best way to test and I wanted to see if there was a way to do text checking instead. I know in MS windows, I can programatically get access to any window's text, but I have looked long and hard for a "screen text dump" for X Windows and have not found any. There are lots of screenshot apps in the web, but none that output text so we can do text comparisons. Does anyone know of a way?
Also, there are apps that allow me to copy and paste from VNC/CYGWIN to MS Windows but our particular app doesn't allow copying (won't allow highlighting) text on most parts of the window . Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
