Report output verification against sql 2k5 data
This is my first post at QA Forums and I want to thank you in advanced. Any feedback is welcome.
We have a system where soap xml data flows into 4 sql server 2k5 databases and is then thrown into an olap instance of sql server 2k5 at a scheduled time. The olap provides a central warehouse where customizable reports can be generated by the end-user through a web ui. Reports are generated to a PDF-like format and eventually printed to paper.
The test focus that i've been tasked with is to ensure data integrity/validity from the transactional db to the olap db and finally verify that the generated reports are accurate.
The acceptance verification of the data going from transactional to olap db is conceptually manageable to me but the verification of reports (PDF, most likely) need to be verified against the olap source db. I'm not sure how to approach this problem. Should I investigate a visual gui verification tool that can read Pdf? I'm luckily early in this project and have time to investigate. If anyone has any experience in this type of automation I would greatly appreciate your thoughts/suggestions/recommendations.
Re: Report output verification against sql 2k5 data
pdf's and crystal reports have been problematic for me in the past ... what I have done in the past is either automating the export of those reports into some other medium (if possible an excel file, access db, or csv file by which I can query via ADO (also automated of course)), or automate the execution of the stored procedures/web services in the same manner that the ui is extracting the data. Dunno if anyone has an easier sollution, but this has worked for me.
