We are in the process of converting our application from client/server to a web based click one type application in .NET environment. Currently all our testing is manual and we are looking to automate some of the test cases - at least the regression testing ones. I am looking for ideas as to which tools are available/recommended to test these type of applications. Is WinRunner (record/play) type of testing tool the best uption or are there any other new breed of tools to test .net applications. Also please keep in mind that the QA group has little/no technical back ground.
To automate with most tools you really need an automation expert to guide you and automation engineers to develop and maintain your automation. Look around the site and any of the tools advertised here will automate. Even though you currently do not have technical people you may want to look past record/playback its generally not considered as a great option. See some discussion in this thread:
What you say is a bit confusing.
I think that you are talking about ClickOnce.
ClickOnce is the latest installation technology from Microsoft for deploying and updating Smart Client Projects using a central server.
Automation of smart-clients that are installed with ClickOnce is challenging. It is very different than automation of a regular app.
The program executes in a secure sandbox provided by .NET code access security that limits what it’s allowed to do based on the evidence it presents.
ClickOnce does not expose the executable’s location and doesn’t keep info on the registry either.
Your best option is to create a list of tool vendors and have them come in and show you their products within your environment or to provide you with a trial copy. A trial copy is better if there is someone who knows test automation available. As LynneM says, you really should have an automation expert guide you through this.
