Is anyone aware of an automated tool which is designed specifically to test the production of Annual Statements?
The final output being produced here is hardcopy documents which represent the customer's account details and performance of their investments across a variety of financial products.
Currently manual testing is performed against this output with PDF files examined in the first few test cycles with the hardcopy examined and certified for final sign-off.
I once tested the report from a monthly batch cycle, verifying test run against live copies of the reports. These were also hardcopy printouts which ran into dozens of boxes of printed output which we verified manually!
The next time around however, we simply used a comparison tool to compare the output files, with only dates/times being the difference. Hours as versus days of work the previous time around!!
I'm not sure if this type of comparison would apply here? If so see if you can find a tool to compare PDFs?
A possible trick if your system creates a PDF file for the report is to save it off and use a PDF converter to translate it to ASCII Text and then run a comparison of the two ASCII files (baseline and new). You can write the compare function in VBScript (check out the information on MSDN) to do it (probably have the conversion process automated with VBScript too if the Converter has command line capabilities).
Just gonna have to be a little creative on this one.
