Re: What is a good tool to learn automated testing for a beginner
How much experience have you had with Testing in general?
That is one prerequisite of the craft of Automated Testing that can't be learned, only gained through experience. If you have very little, or feel you are lacking in the basics of testing procedures and policies, you should shore those up first prior to taking on learning automated testing.
Second question - how much experince have you had with Programming in general?
Another prerequisiste (to being GOOD at auomated testing) is understanding code structures and logic. If you are lacking in this area, I would recommend looking at coding information first as it will impact your ability to excel at automated testing, no matter what the salesman of the tool is telling you.
Third question - Is this on your own or through your company?
If you company already has a tool set in place, it would benefit you to start with that one as the experience and information is already in house. If not, or if this is a personal project to try to get into a field you haven't yet touched on, you can look at some of the free tools out there that allow you information over the web and a base of coding information you can learn as you go.
