opinion on Test Complete,Vermont high test, Functional tester

    Hi,

Users who have worked with or heard of the following tools, kindly give your opinions.
    - Test Complete
    - Vermont high test plus
    - Functional tester.

I'm planning to start evaluating some automation tools. From what i have heard/used, Robot is memory intensive(it slows down the machine and that mostly interferes with your testing) and expensive, Silk is quite difficult to understand/use( a lot of modification is required on the scripts). QTP is way too expensive and anyway it has some trouble working with our application. We had heard a lot of good hearsay about eggplant, but we dont have a MacOs to host it on( we want the tool to work with whatever we have available)

Hence I have shortlisted the above 3 tools and we have just started evaluating. Has anyone used or heard about any of these tools can provide their reviews.

    Thanks

Re: opinion on Test Complete,Vermont high test, Functional tester

    Hi Jn,

I have used Hightest and TestComplete, but not functional tester. I started with Hightest Plus a number of years ago, and liked it at the time. Unfortunately, when we moved onto Stingray Objective Studio as our GUI tool, it was not compatible, so we had to drop it. The tech support was always good, and I imagine, like most tools, it has come on along way since I have used it. It was always an easy tool to use, and IMO, well worth evaluating.

We started using TestComplete a couple of years ago, and it works like a dream with our app. It is easy to use and install, with good technical support and regular updates. What i particularly like about it, in addition to ease of use and compatibility with my apps, is seamless integration with a range of profiling tools. Thus can get code coverage analysis, memory and resource leak checking, and performance analysis, for all your tests.

A word of warning; either of these tools will take a significant amount of time and effort to implement in a development environment. Specifically, developing scripts to exhaustively test a large application, IMO, takes about as long as developing the manuals for that application from scratch. That's assuming reasonably clean Record/Playback/Edit style scripting. You will also use quite a bit of time getting used to the peculiarities of script recording and development. Before you start evaluating, you should IMO, state your requirements, in terms of what you are going to test, and how you intend to use the tools, i.e. manual scripting, record playback, or a combination, and the results you expect. This should give you a fair idea of the resources you will need to dedicate both to evaluation and ongoing usage.

I would also consider including the more expensive tools in your trial, as the license cost is not the major cost factor in these types of exercise.

Let us know your results when you finish,

    Best regards,

    Shane

n.b. the context of this response is a small devlopment team with little previous understanding of automation, mature C++ MFC app, small budget, and ongoing pressure to get robust product updates out the door.

We use Test Complete at our office and like Shane have enjoyed working with it. While I believe it has a slightly higher learning curve than say QuickTest, It has a great deal of power and flexibility.

The other factor with test complete is the awesome service. The support from their staff has been first class from my perspective always taking the time to respond to reasonable questions in their forums.

In the end you have to know your target application and take some time to properly evaluate your testing tool(s) to make sure they are going to fit the bill for your application.

    Good luck in your search!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">You may want to reconsider dismissing Eggplant out-of-hand simply because you don't have a Mac. With Mac Mini's selling for as little as $499, it's really an insignificant part of your overall testing costs. And Redstone will even lend you a Mac for evaluating Eggplant if you need it.
