As a start you could follow up some of the links given in replies on this forum which will provide a good source of information.
Also look at the White Papers forum on this site - from what I recall there's also some good stuff there.
I might also suggest that you take a programming course. Visual Basic is a good one to start with. All of the techniques that you will learn there can be used in whatever tool you start with. You can also use VB for test automation. Read Mary Sweeney's book "Visual Basic for Testers". It is excellent.
