Most software comes with an install package that makes sure the installation is correct, but you will find that there are limitations when you go outside the realm of PC-based installs. You don't give many clues about what you are trying to accomplish, so I don't know to refer you to an install package generation tool or a testing tool that generates a distributable test object.
i guess i am looking for a testing tool that generates a distributable test object. Where i could give the product to the customer. When they get it i could give them some type of test to "validate" that there installation was correct. And i would like to run a few simple tests.
Other people have talked about such a post-deploy script. We use one ourselves when we deploy our web site, but that is an in-house script. I know that one company approached Segue about getting such an executable, and the issue came up with Compuware as well.
In the end I have never seen someone deliver this type of "canned post deploy test script" project.
There are several simple test tools available for free, such as AutoIt V3, that will allow you to create a test suite and distribute it with your code. Actually it was originally designe for that purpose. It does not work in all environments but that is a common restriction for most tools. Look for it in ZDNet.Com and you should be able to download it. It is not difficult to master.
