Need a GUI Tool for Third Party Code Testing
The company I work for uses a third party to write code and we do the vast majority of the testing. The interface is made up of floating toolbars, many objects on the screen at once and has issues with timing and loss of focus. While a harness would be an ideal solution for testing the functionality, since it is a third party we don't have access to the code. I tried to use Quick test Pro but I found I was writing more code to account for the loss of focus and timeing issues than I could handle, also when moving it from one machine to another, it rarely functioned. The code is written in VB 6 and is running on a windows operating system.
Is there an automated testing tool out there that is forgiving of loss of focus issues and timing problems or am I stuck with manual testing? (Yes the ideal solution would be to have the vendor fix these problems but that is not an option for various reasons)
Re: Need a GUI Tool for Third Party Code Testing
Before you spend money on any testing tool try to use AutoIt V3, which is remarkably versatile, and it is free (until the author figures out how good a tool it is, perhaps). It is not too difficult to verify or set focus as part of your testing solution. Although I don't have much information about your specific testing issues, or to suggest more robust solutions, this is a good starting point to see if a test tool can take control of the user interface. I personally love it even if as a result of the findings I may select another tool that is specifically designed for data-driven testing to handle the bulk of the testing afterwards. I think you can find AutoIt still on ZDNet.com, good luck.
