Has anyone come across any good training for setting up a good automation process? We have already picked the product, we are just looking for training on how to get our automation process started. I keep reading that 80% of the companies fail in the automation projects, and I don't want ours to be the next.
I am not sure that there is a good course that will ensure your project will not be the next automation attempt to fail. The factors that cause the failures go well beyound just the strategy and the implementation approach.
There are many good courses, that cover aspects of how to automate well, but i believe the main killer is contextual and will be local issues to each environment.
The element in the post that concerns me is that you have picked the tool and yet are unsure of the process to use. I find this strange as for me these should be complimentary like a hand and glove, with out this fit it can be a costly mistake.
Rather then a training course it may be better to get a mentor, or automation specialist on site to help you understand the context and provide some guidance to approaches that could add value and be maintained.
Some of the areas which will need covering are the team skill level, the tools used, the development languages, the goals of your testing, the spend and ROI expected, success criteria, development and test methods and test environments available and what testing is being done in the test life cycle.

Hey, for once I agree with Neill! Go out and hire a contractor, (get references) who is certified or at least has several years working with the tool you selected. This is absolutely the best practices approach if as you say, you've picked the tool but have no idea of the process to put behind it.
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

I agree with both Rich and Neil. Get someone that is seasoned at getting things up and going and at the same time can transfer knowledge to you and your team. I have used the BSDGroup on many occassions to come in and train or audit us just to make sure we are on the correct track. My contact there is Robb Ralston is you want to feel them out 877 956 3287.
Life should NOT be a trip to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an cool and well preserved body, but rather to skid in, chocolate in one hand, beer in the other, body wrecked, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride!
