    Documentation for test tools?

The company I work for has some in house test tools(written in Perl, Java), which were created by some senior QA engineers. However, there is no documentation abailable for those tools. There are test plans and test spc for each component that needs to be tested, but there is nothing for those test tools. If they don't tell you anything, you will have a hard time to figure out what's going on with those tools. My question is, do people provide documentation for in house test tools in general? Are there any known template/pattern for those test tool documentation?

    Re: Documentation for test tools?

If the tool is intended for use by the person writing the tool, generally there is no documentation provided.

If the tool is to be used widely in the company, yes, documentation is generally provided as part of the development effort for the tool.

OK, do you know of any such documentation template, so that other people who use the tool will have enough information to start?

No, I do not know of any templates as such. I would take the table of contents from any user manual that you like and use that as the template.
