Suggestions for a testing tool
We create many custom Excel and Word templates( over a 1000) along with COM addins that the templates used. Each year as we update the templates, add new ones and make modifications to the COM addins that all of the templates make use of we have a big regression testing that we must perform. Currently we are looking at WinRunner and TestPartner, does anyone have QA testing experience testing MS Excel or Word templates and suggestions for good automated testing tools that may help.
Re: Suggestions for a testing tool
Both Excel and Word fully support Automation, formerly known as "OLE Automation", although I'm not sure if Microsoft renamed that technology to yet another name in the .NET world!
If your testing team has some development skills -- and they will need development skills to effectively use WinRunner or TestPartner, I believe -- they might want to see how far they get using the Automation objects that are exposed by Excel and Word. They could likely a script in Python, VBA, or tons of other languages to drive those apps without the need for purchasing a testing tool.
Here's a simple example from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1
And if you install both Python and the win32all Windows extensions there are some samples that drive Word and Excel, although I forget the precise name.
Anyway, I always advocate using existing automation technology until it proves inadequate, rather than buying a tool just to buy something.
