Where can I find statistics for attempting to Automate?
I hear a lot of companies get so exited about purchasing an automated test tool and after a year or so, it just sits on the shelf. What could be some of the reasons why this sort of thing happens? Are there any statistics regarding this?

I don't know about stats and I have seen the dustware you refer to. 'Tis a pity.
1) The tool-users couldn't deliver for various reasons:
1.1) wrong skillset
1.2) agressive schedule
1.3) tried to automate too early and the organization tired of looking at something that "did not appear to work" for them
2) The intended tool-users quit - for various reasons.
3) The project was killed.
4) Too many issues with the tool - to the point of overwhelming the organizations' resources to correct and implement successfully.
I'm sure there are many other reasons...
