Is there a set of criteria to be considered when evaluating a Test tool for web base(peoplesoft). I want to compare WinRunner against Quick Test Professional 6 (both by Mecury), and have to select one to suit our automation needs.
Your opinions of any of these tools would be very much appreciated. Such as good or bad experience, which one you feel is better for web based tests. Any docucments or sources of information would be very helpful.
Thank you very much.
Re: Tools Evaluation
Having just gone through a demostration of Quick Test Professional 2 days ago here is what I would advise you to do. Ask for the differences between the 2 tools. I always thought WinRunner would be the one for us because this is what most of the people I have come across had experience in. (thus shortening learning curve for new employees)
Here are some things to consider:
1) Who will be responsible for the creation/upkeep of scripts? If it is the testing team, do you have resources who are versed in VB? (VB is the back end for Quick Test.)
2) Do you have to support legacy applications such as those using PowerBuilder? If so, WinRunner is the tool for you.
3) Are you looking towards moving to .net technology? Supported by Quick Test professional
It looked like Quick Test would be a great fit for our web application. But since our backend components are homegrown, we are looking for a tool that will handle back end testing as well.
Our search (much like yours) continues on. Keep in mind that if your company is willing to purchase a tool right now, strike while the iron is hot! On the other hand though, don't be so hasty that you end up purchasing a tool that does not satisfy all your needs. You may not get a second chance.
