My company has just started to look into automated test tools and because of the differences in the areas that we test in different tools from different companies seem to be best fit for the job. The question is can we survive with just one Test managment tool. Does anyone have any experiance on how different automated test tools (e.g. Winrunner, SilkTest, QARun, Robot)work with different test managment tools (e.g. TestDirector, QADirector, TestManager) from other vendors. If they work at all together.
Some tools work with some "test managers" others don't. I don't know the grid, but it should be easy enough to make. I'm guessing you could come up with a list of all the tools that would need to tie into the "test manager" then pick the "test managers" you want to evaluate and start asking specific questions.
What I do know is that it is always possible write a custom interface for that one tool that you have that no one supports.
I know that TestManager can be used with WinRunner and that TestDirector can be used with Robot, but I have never actually done either.
All of those functional test tools can work with all of those test management tools (excepting later versions of QA Director from what I can see) I have tried. The only problem you get is most of the interaction (if not a sister product) is you have to run from command line with arguments.
You don't get all the sort of 'run this function with this test file or other function' bits.
All of the above tools also have API type functionality allowing you interact a bit better with the tool but really if you buy the functional test tool from a particular vendor it's best to go with the test management tool from them too!
