Which Automated Test tool should i choose?

    Hi All,

I've been given a project to select an Automated testing tool to test window2K based application. Focus on it's GUI,no website, no network included. I know C,C++. Not VB. Any input will be appreciated.(please including the tool's price).

BTW,what's the difference between Function testing and Performance Testing?

    Thanks!

Re: Which Automated Test tool should i choose?

Both topics have been covered in depth on the forums - do a search.

As far as tools - you will need to evaluate each based on your own personal/project based requirements. Personally, I like Rational products. You will find everyone on this forum has a preference, again based on their own experience, likes, dislikes, biases, skills, etc.

Wow - functional vs. performance. In my opinion, I see more differences than similarities! Of course, I am a Performance Engineer by nature. I guess most simply put.

Functional Testing - ensure the application does what it is supposed to do (functionally) when a single user is accessing the system.

Performance Testing - ensure the application is reponsive, scalable and stable when being accessed by the expected user load (modeled accurately) or greater and continues to function properly. Performance testing may also include things like stress and spike testing.

How's that? Please follow up if you have more questions.

Re: Which Automated Test tool should i choose?

Thanks, Scott.I'll search for the answer to my 1st qustion. Right now I understand function testing, as for performance testing I still want to get idea from real testing.

Rational is good for small company and small application? How is the price, compared to
    SilkTest?

You have any idea about TestQuest? is it suitable for GUI testing?

Re: Which Automated Test tool should i choose?

Rational is neither the most or the least expensive. I have not actually used SilkTest, so I can't say. I read an analyst report that said that "Segue had fallen out of favor", but I don't know what that means. Everything I see and hear in the marketplace shows that they are still one of the top tool vendors in both the functional and performance testing areas.

As for Performance Testing - take a look at my site http://www.perftestplus.com It has a project based performance engineering methodology, articles and presentations about performance testing. Might clear some things up for you - or it might just lead to more questions <shrug> either way it's something, right?

Re: Which Automated Test tool should i choose?

The first step i think would be to understand the need for automation in relation to manual testing. Once you have your premises for automation, then selling the tool to the management would be a piece of cake.
Deciding on what automated tool to use is a totally different ball game.
My experience shows that, the technologies used, nature of the application, budget, skilled manpower, and time would be the driving force before a tool is decided. Application cannot be developed keeping the tool in mind, if a function can be tested using the tool or not.
Suggestion: Try to get as many trial versions of tools as possible, evaluate your apps. thoroughly and then get a match.
Mercury tools are great, and their demos might be greater(they give their demos on the flight reservation app. and it looks so awesome), but their tools might not work for your application.

I definately think that you should see the tool working on YOUR application and not just moving some windows around in some canned demo. If you want a demo of a tool to see for your self, drop me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help you.
