I am very new to test automation, and want to try out some tools to test i.e. an installer.
Do any of you know where I can find a (plain and easy to use) test tool, which allows me to set up a set of test cases and execute them? (Preferably free or shareware)
This is just for try out to see if this is something we can adapt to our system.
The app. is based on C++
You should be aware that introducing test automation is often a costly process. The tools are often really expensive, and the cost of learning and adapting the test process is costly. The ROI is not instant. Introducing test automation is thus a major concern that should be discussed with the project managers before even thinking about playing around with it.
Now when I've warned you about the cost aspect with test automation I can proceed to your question. I have not found any Test tools that are free or shareware. What I recommend you to do (if you are ready to ask your project manager for many $$) is to contact sales rep. for the major tool vendors and ask for an evaluation copy. My advice (since I assume $$ is out of the question) is to download TestComplete which has 30 days of evaluation. In that time you should be able to have an opinion if test automation is good for your project or not. A "bonus" is that TestComplete is the cheapest good tool around. (But the cost of learning is still high....)
