    What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

Does anyone have any information on where automated test tools are trending? Any info on what is hot vs. what is not? Any info would be great! Thanks

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

I would say Winrunner by Mercury Interactive and Rational Robot are the biggest automated tools and most popular, in my opinion. Keep in mind that if someone with an automation background doesn't have experience in a particular tool, it doesn't mean they are not suitable for a particular automation position. Most of the automated tools out there basically work the same.
I used to live in Massachusetts and have spoken with representatives from your company. There were some automated testing jobs I was not considered for because I didn't have experience in a particular "tool" but I did have several years of automated testing experience. It really only takes a day or two for an experienced tester to have a good understanding on how to use a tool they've never used before.

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

I currently use the Silk Products and think they are OK. I took a class on SQA products and was not too impressed, it takes multiple steps in SQA to do the same thing in Silk where you only need to do one step.

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

Rational's solution is set up very differently from Mercury's. Where Merc's got TestDirector, Rational covers the same functionality in:

    ClearQuest
    RequirementsPro
    TestManager

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

I think Silk,Winrunner and Rational Robot are equally good but i like Silk due to the programming flexibility in it.
Winrunner is hot due to the vigorous marketing strategy of Mercury Interactive.

Thanks for your feedback-- I am curious about why you think Mercury and Rational are the most popular? Is it usability? Cost benefits? functionality?

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

If you look at the tools out there and who's got powerful Data Driven Testing, it's the big three (Merc, Rat, Seg). From what I've seen so far, I think Mercury's got it laid out in a way that makes sense more than the other two.

Winrunner's DDT can be modified in Excel where you can slam through a bunch of functions to get all the data you want.

Mercury and Rational also have random data generation functions too.

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

For me, I like Winrunner's functionality and how it works with Test Director, another product from Mercury. The language used in Winrunner (TSL) is an offshoot of C, so there aren't too many limitations. I like how the GUI map works in Winrunner and the exception handling. Also, there are many different types of verification checkpoints. There are some automated tools that only use bitmap checkpoints, and that is not very good.
The same goes for Rational Robot except their TSL language is based off of Basic. I don't know if Rational has a similar product like TestDirector because I have only used Rational Robot. I'm currently using Winrunner and TestDirector.

Re: What\'s Hot vs. What\'s Not

I agree 100% that SilkTest, Robot and Winrunner are the best three.
Robot and Silk are my top two. Robot's language is basic out the box but the object datatype allows it to extend far beyond it's capabilities using C++, dll's or Visual Basic.
I have done a review on Visual Test, Robot, Winrunner, Silktest and QARun if you want a copy
send email to ray.robinson@barclays.co.uk. It is not 100% complete but it has a good 27 pages so far.

    Yes, this is true but...

The functionality of something like ReqPro is FAR over what's provided in TD. This is why TD allows hooks into things like DOORs and ReqPro - because the requirements module offers very little customization, and far less robust functionality than does ReqPro.

ClearQuest is similar, but to a lesser degree - it does offer more functionality than TDs tracker, but they've also added a great deal of customization in the more recent versions of TD for this area.
