    Custom objects vs automation software

I'm testing a unique client application in which we use buttons as our main points of functionality. In SilkTest i have to rely on mouse clicks that miss the buttons half the time, maybe because of a minor UI change or just something like the application being moved on my desktop. Do any of the other automation tools have something to make selecting these buttons easier than relying on coordinates? Something more reliable? Thanks n stuff.

Re: Custom objects vs automation software

Assuming your AUT has the buttons evenly sized and spaced, you can use the location suffix (see syntax below) to ensure that your mouse clicks are somewhat in the dead-center of each button. The syntax is:
    (column:total-columns, row:total-rows)

For irregularly sized and spaced buttons where you are stuck with x,y coordinates, you may want to get the x and y as close as possible to the button's center point so that slight change or movement of this button will not cause your mouse click to fail.

Let your developers know that GUI changes such as moving buttons around do affect your automated scripts and hope that they don't do these changes every release or every other release.

i think that that will work since ours are spaced nicely. Thanks

I have found Winrunner to be a better solution for windows based apps as it maps buttons based on descriptors such as name, window in which they appear, etc. it is not dependent on x,y coordinates, screen resolution, button placement etc.

By way of clarification: the approach you describe is actually the same as the approach SilkTest normally adopts.

The poster is having trouble as his app contains custom objects which are not recognised.

These would have to be dealt with as Virtual Objects in WR which would also be x,y coordinate dependant and would be subject to the same potential problems/failures.
