Automated test to detect symbol in video player
I am looking for advice how to solve the problem to monitor a video player (flash, silverlight etc.) and detect how often a symbol is showing.
I want to see in a competitors player how often they are buffering (they show a symbol when they do). What is the best way to do this automatically?
Re: Automated test to detect symbol in video player
Depends on how the symbol is being displayed. If that symbol is an overlay, you try polling on it using an automation tool that supports Flex. If you can figure out the identifying elements of overlay, then you can poll on it. If the symbol is drawn on the canvas displaying the video itself, then the only way is to use image recognition.
If the security is not very good on that particular video player, what you can do is create your own flex application that loads their flex application into your own, and try to override some of the functionality so allow you to hook into it. This technique is commonly known as XSF. https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Test..._Site_Flashing Don't ask me on how to actually code it. At this point you're practically hacking and need to know figure out the internals of your competitor's product.
