    GUI Automation in Java Swing

    Hello,

We use a Java Swing application that we have been tasked to automate. We are a startup - so QTP isn't an option.

Management has given us two choices: AutoIT and vTasks

AutoIT is free - but we have had issues getting it to differentiate between button and background in Swing.

vTasks costs money - but does a nice job of automating the Swing app.

Question - before we purchase vTasks - has anyone used vTasks and can provide a better, possibly free, solution to automating swing apps?

    Thanks!

As I know the only free automation tool supports Java Swing App is Google WindowTester Pro, but need more development skills.

Definitely AutoIT is not a option. No idea about vTasks, but looks like the price is similar with more popular TestComplete. Try the tool to see if it could recognize your most complex objects, say table, tree etc. or make sure you could find workaround if not directly supported.

We did it using Silk Test Tool, It goes really well with java swing objects. QTP is the best option though.

Actually you may use auto it as well, but you will only need to introduce some kind of hack in your JRE

Could you elaborate? I'm just a tester with very little coding knowledge myself - I would need to talk to my developers about making any hacks to the JRE. Thanks!!

Re: GUI Automation in Java Swing

Thanks! I sent it to our dev. manager - apparently he had looked at this option - as well as AutoIT has a jna wrapper someone wrote and pasted in the forums.

We may just check out some other options as we haven't purchased vTask just yet. Thanks everyone!
