1. sorry if this isn't the correct place to post and
2. Sorry if the question has been asked many a time before.
I've recently moved jobs and my current role involves carrying out testing of some VB.net tools in excel over different regional settings( german, french and english) and I'm starting to look at ways to automate the regional testing as its a bit mundane carrying out the same tests in different regional settings.
I'm not sure where is the best place to investigate which tools are suitable to use for this or if indeed there are any..
Do you need to do front end (GUI) testing or testing of the data itself?
If the data only, you can use the Excel COM object to get and put data yourself using your language of choice. You mention VB.NET, which has access to Excel's COM object just fine. So no need to buy a tool since this will work for "free".
The way the excel tools work is the produce calibration files for a C#.net application.
The main testing that gets carried out on the excel side of things is to check that the functionality works the same over different regional settings and that the same numbers are produced. so that when calibrating the spreadsheets in different regions the numbers will be consistent. common errors in the code seem to be around true/false values and the different regional settings
DO you have a link where I could read a bit more about excel COM I'll see if that would be any good for data testing?
Do a Google search for VBScript and Excel. This will give you numerous links to ways to drive Excel from VBScript. Also, this will give you ideas about how to use the VBA inside of Excel to drive your own tests. Finally, if you want to use a VB.Net application to drive Excel you will do it through the InterOp functionality of VB.NET (VS 2008 or VB 2010).
