I used UTP for 3 or 4 years and it was a very useful tool with a good solid framework for automation. I have not used it in the past 3 years however. The company got involved in a very large contract in Texas and sort of ignored UTP upgrades and service. They have a small, very good support group, or at least they used to. They were slow to evolve and keep up with the other tools which they interfaced with such as WinRunner. Now I believe they have actually included many of the QTP features directly into their tool. I know Ed Kitt personally, He's the CEO of SDT and a really nice person. His book is very good but a bit dated. That being said, you might want to look around before you make a firm commitment as there are many other tools on the market which offer a lot of diversity and versatile frameworks as well.
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
