    Good functional automation testing tool

    Hello everybody,

I am a tester with about 2 years experience in manual testing. I am interested in learning a functional automation testing tool. Pls suggest me which tool i should learn? Also please share a few websites/ebooks from which i can learn the basics of automation testing.

    Shridhar,

Does your company use a test automation tool?
If so, that would probably be the one to learn first.

Further, do you have any development experience? If not I would learn at least on development language and the methodologies that are behind development. Test automation IS development and should be treated as such.
If this or any response has helped you, please reply to the thread stating that it worked so other people with a similar issue will know how you fixed your issue!

    I use WinTask - it's a good tool.

But all the tools you see represented here at SQAForums.com are also good tools.

    Shridhar,
You can learn QuickTest Professional (QTP). It is a very easy to use tool. You can download a 2 week trial of it for free from

Re: Good functional automation testing tool

Do you already have an idea what you want to test (type of application(s), used technologies, platform ...)?
Are you familiar with certain programming languages or will you rather need a tool where programming skills are not needed or not essential for the use of the tools basic functionality?
Are you planning on creating complex test scenarios or do you rather want to start with simple tests?
There is a variety of automation tools for different purposes which vary in handling and price.
Depending on your further plans there are different possibilities.
Also a 2 week trial might not be sufficient to get fully familiar with a tool. (We for example have increased our free trial period to 4 weeks and still have a lot of people who need an additional extension before making a purchasing decision.)
